About my collections

I try to watch anything and everything, as long as it has something to say (and sometimes, movies that have nothing to say are welcome diversions as well). I'm a huge TV junkie, and more than likely if it's on TV, I've seen it (and probably watch it religiously). I play video games every so often, but usually only have time for them on breaks, so my collection is limited. I don't read as much as I'd like to, so when I do I try to pick carefully. And finally, I don't pay attention to the music industry at all and usually just keep iTunes open as background noise, so don't expect anything intelligent from me about music today.

Not even good for what you'd think

Posted : 17 years, 6 months ago on 14 June 2007 06:22 (A review of Hostel: Part II)

Let's face it: no one was expecting Hostel 2 to be a GOOD movie. What some of us DID expect was a fun, grossly inventive gore-fest a la Saw 3, where the acting is hilarious bad but the characters you hate are redeemed when they are offed in ridiculously silly/scary ways.

However, Hostel 2 couldn't even live up to those low expectations. There's no "fun" for the first 2/3 of the movie (except for a stupid quick prologue wrapping up a loose end from the first movie) and during that 2/3, the ONLY enjoyable thing is laughing at the bad dialogue and acting, which I hope was intentional. Dawn Matarazzo is HILARIOUS in how crappy her lines and deliveries are, and the sidekick friend is not much better. But, there's little blood and gore to be found, and what Eli Roth thinks are "plot movement" and "character development" are nothing more than a big waste of time.

That is, until the movie's climax, when... the deaths are ultimately disappointing and the plot developments are nonsensical. Really, all around, this movie was just a giant waste of time, and fun for laughing at (not with) and nothing else.

Great movie, for the most part.

Definitely pointed satire and mockery of typical action films. Bogged down a bit by the lengthy intro/exposition scenes but MORE than delivered in the second hour with an in-your-face blowout that was intense and crazy and awesome. Definitely worth seeing if you like British comedy, but Shaun of the Dead was better.

A true experience

Posted : 17 years, 8 months ago on 9 April 2007 06:36 (A review of Grindhouse)

Go see this if you want to have FUN at the movies- plain and simple. Neither film is a masterpiece, and neither takes itself too seriously: Planet Terror is over-the-top zombie action and Death Proof is typical Tarantino fare- fast and profane dialogue, a stuntman with bloodlust and an unexpected plot turn in the second half. The fake movie trailers interspersed are entertaining as well and the whole package has a really unique feel to it that makes it more than a regular trip to the movies. Definitely worth watching if you want to be purely entertained for 3+ hours.

Jesus Camp review

Posted : 17 years, 10 months ago on 11 February 2007 08:29 (A review of Jesus Camp)

Prelude76's review is spot-on. This movie is FRIGHTENING, probably scarier than 90% of the horror movies that came out in 2006. And it was brilliant in the way that it did not skew the viewer, or use unfair editing, in order to get points across- everything in the documentary speaks for itself. I have read that the fundamentalists featured in the film are happy with the way it came out and do not feel they were portrayed unfairly- but anyone with half a mind will be able to spot the hypocrisy and irony hidden throughout. (The best example of this is the lead evangelist going on the radio arguing that her indoctrination of children is not political at all; this follows a scene where she produces a cardboard replica of George W. Bush at her bible camp.)

I recommend this film to anyone who has even the slightest interest in uncovering a disturbing sector of the American public.

Decent slow-burn thriller

Posted : 17 years, 11 months ago on 2 January 2007 03:34 (A review of The Good Shepherd)

A solid movie, bogged down by its running length, horde of characters, and non-linearity. Behind the convolutedness, however, there is a good story to be told.

Surprisingly good

Posted : 17 years, 11 months ago on 1 January 2007 06:10 (A review of Dreamgirls (2007))

Recommended for anyone who likes musicals, especially if you're familiar with the Dreamgirls broadway production. Great cast, great music, great direction.

I feel like this song was written about me because this happens to me a lot:
SHE SAID i'M GOING OUT WITH MY GIRLFRIENDS
MAGUARITAS AT THE HOLIDAY INN
OH MERCY...MY ONLY THOUGHT
WAS TEQUILA MAKES HER CLOTHES FALL OFF

I TOLD HER PUT AN EXTRA LAYER ON
I KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SHE DRINKS PATRON
HER CLOSETS MISSING HALF THE THINGS SHE BOUGHT
TEQUILA MAKES HER CLOTHES FALL OFF

CH....SHE'LL START BY KICKING OUT OF HER SHOES
LOSE AN EARRING IN HER DRINK
LEAVE HER JACKET IN THE BATH ROOM STALL
DROP A CONTACT DOWN THE SINK

THEM PANTYHOSE AIN'T GONNA LAST TOO LONG
IF THE D J PUTS BON JOVI ON
SHE MIGHT COME HOME IN A TABLECLOTH
TEQUILA MAKES HER CLOTHES FALL OFF

SOLO

SHE CAN HANDLE ANY CHAMPAIGNE BRUNCH
BRIDAL SHOWER WITH BACARDI PUNCH
JELLO SHOOTERS FULL OF SMIRNOFF...
BUT TEQUILA MAKES HER CLOTHES FALL OFF

CH....SHE'LL START BY KICKING OUT OF HER SHOES
LOSE AN EARRING IN HER DRINK
LEAVE HER JACKET IN THE BATH ROOM STALL
DROP A CONTACT DOWN THE SINK

SHE DON'T MEAN NOTHING
SHE'S JUST HAVING FUN
TOMORROW SHE'LL SAY
OH WHAT HAVE I DONE
HER FRIENDS WILL JOKE ABOUT THE STUFF SHE LOST
CAUSE TEQUILA MAKES HER CLOTHES FALL OFF
